Throwing Philosophy

The number one thing Rik tries to instill is to play catch the proper way. He believes that if you work on playing catch and create good throwing mechanics it will translate onto the mound and the same can be said if you don't.  Playing catch the proper way is the fastest way to get better because you can throw everyday, you cant throw off the mound everyday.  Thus there is more time to create proper throwing mechanics by playing catch than there is on the mound.

Pitching Philosophy

Rik is a stickler on the mechanics of pitching.  He believes that you can work on certain things everyday for about 5-10 minutes to improve your game and this can be done without throwing a ball.  He also understands that every pitcher has a different style of pitching but they all get to certain points in their delivery that are the same across the board.  So within his lessons he works on getting to these points so it creates added accuracy, velocity, and overall arm strength and health.

Coaching Philosophy

Rik understands that the students are at the lesson trying to get better.  He also understands that everybody learns in different ways.  So taking these factors in account, Rik is patient with his students.  He knows it is a process and not a quick fix.  He is constantly tell his students to "relax because I don't expect you to get it on your frst, second, or third lesson".  Rik believes that the real work starts when the students leave the lesson and work on the things covered in the lesson at home.  If they don't work on the things gone over in the lesson throughout the week, how are they going to get better and move forward?
